Keys to Successful Parenting
The responsibility of being a parent is an awesome one indeed. Certainly we all want what is best for our children and want to teach them what they will need to know to succeed in life. We also want to guide them in ways that will be of benefit to them and steer them away from areas of trouble. No one is born with all the answers for parenting, it is a learning process. We can, however, learn from others who have gone through the experience of being a parent and save ourselves a lot of trouble and heartache.
If you are a two-parent family the key to working together as a team is communication. Talk to each other about your goals for your family and how you want to accomplish those goals. Compromise will be a lot easier if you have a good understanding of each others’ concerns and desires.
If you are a single parent, the entire burden falls to you but you can still be successful in your commitment to raising well-adjusted, responsible and loving children. It will help to have a plan and to know what it is you want to have happen and then take the necessary steps to achieving that goal.
Realize that you are human and as such you are not perfect. You will make mistakes. We all do. The key is to not lose confidence in your ability to parent well. When you make mistakes, correct them if you can, apologize if it is called for and commit again to working to be the best parent you can be. Understand that being a parent is one of the hardest (and best!) things you will ever do and that it will test your patience and endurance to the maximum. It can bring out the best in you and the worst. Strive to stay calm as you work through the day to day obstacles that come your way. Resist the urge to shout and lost control. Staying calm and in charge will help create the kind of environment that will make your job a lot easier and will also teach your child to behave in a likewise manner.
Parenting is no doubt the most important job you will ever have. Knowing this, learn all you can about how to do it well and enjoy this special time in your life as much as possible. Even though you may have some days that seem like they will never end, the truth is it goes by all too quickly.
